Grooming your dog

When and why to groom

Grooming is an important part of your dog’s health. Regular brushing and combing helps to remove hair and dirt, and prevents matting. Start with short grooming sessions to get your dog used to the sensation. A good time to do this is after an energetic walk when your dog just wants to relax. It’s also a great way to bond with your pet.

Your dog will soon look forward to the affection and attention they get from you during this routine brushing. Regularly groomed dogs also tend to have healthier and shinier coats because it stimulates the blood supply to the skin.

Regularly groomed dogs have a healthier coat.

Comb, brush, wash and trim

Of course, your canine will need a wash from time to time. You can find specially formulated dog shampoos in the pet care section of your local Coles supermarket. How often you wash your dog depends on its type. Some very active dogs will require more frequent bathing, while dogs spending more time inside require less.

And don’t forget your dog’s nails. Trimming requires special care, because there are blood vessels in the nail. If you cut too short, they may bleed. For more information about trimming your dogs nails, contact your local vet.
